4.22.20 | “Blessed Assuring, Beware of the Luring” | James 1:12-14 Study | Danny Scotton, Jr.

This is the fourth lesson in our Bible Study series on the letter of James, which was live streamed on April 22, 2020.

The lesson was originally on James 1:12-15, but we saved James 1:15 for next time due to time constraints.

Reiterating what was said earlier (James 1:2-4; “Growing Pains“), James writes that those who persevere and remain steadfast through trials will be rewarded by God with the crown of life (i.e., eternal life).

But when we go through trials, we must not deceive ourselves (cf. Jas 1:16) into thinking that God is tempting us (i.e., enticing us to sin). Our wholly good God cannot be tempted to do evil and therefore does not tempt anyone to do evil — which would be evil!

We must not blame God for our moral shortcomings. Our transgressions spring from our own desire that lures us to sin — like a fisherman baits and catches a fish. Beware of temptation; don’t get hooked!

*Update: I mistakenly forgot the last clause of James 1:5 (“and it will be given to you”) on the slideshow. The correction has been made.
