Corrections/Clarifications

1:05 — There are five conflict accounts recorded from Mk 2:1-3:6

1:18 — The account of the healing and forgiving of the paralyzed man is recorded in Mk 2:1-12. The cleansing of the leper is recorded in Mk 1:40-45

3:49 — Amazement does not = faith. For more on this, please see more commentary on Mark 1:22 here. In Jesus, Jesus says that crowd was looking for Him because He gave them bread. He wants them to focus on the Bread of Life (Jn 6:25-27).

11:00 — Jesus says whoever wants to be His disciple must deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow Him (Mk 8:34; Lk 9:23). See previous sermon, “If We’re Following Christ, Christ Comes First”.

12:25 — Even demons believe that Jesus is the Son of God (Mk 3:11, 5:7; cf. Jas 2:19). There is a difference between belief that and belief in. 

14:22 — The Samaritan Woman Jesus talks to at the well (John 4:1f.) becomes an evangelist, spreading the Good News to here people:

39 Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.” (Jn 4:39, NIV)

16:05 — Jesus was on the move.

58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” (Lk 9:58, NIV)

20:55 — We are all sinners in a sense. We all stumble in many ways (Jas 3:2).

10 As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one; (Rom 3:10, NIV)

23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, (Rom 3:23, NIV)

If we claim we do not sin, we lie. Because we all sin, we need to ask for forgiveness.

8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us. (1 Jn 1:8-10, NIV)

However, we should not be living in sin unrepentantly.

9 No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. (1 Jn 3:9, NIV)

25:00 — The scribes/teachers of the Law produced a large collection of many oral traditions . Not all Pharisees were scribes, however. This collection of oral traditions was eventually written down (c. AD 200) in what is called the Mishnah. Jesus addresses these traditions in Mk 7:1-23 || Mt 15:1-20.

25:50 — I use the Third Commandment as an example of placing a “hedge” around the Law. The scribes and Pharisees were not necessarily the ones who began the practice of not saying the name of the LORD at all. The Third Commandment:

7 “You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. (Ex 20:7, NIV)

29:30 — Paul was a Pharisee — at first (Php 3:5)

40:25 — When Samuel is about to anoint one of Jesse’s sons (who turns out to be the youngest — David):

6 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the LORD’s anointed stands here before the LORD.”
7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” (1 Sam 16:6-7, NIV)

49:25 — The Parables of the Lost Sheep (Lk 15:3-7), the Lost Coin (Lk 15:8-10), and the Lost Son(s) (Lk 15:11-32) are told in response to the Pharisees and teachers of the Law:

Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus. 2 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.” (Lk 15:1-2, NIV)

59:00 — The words and deeds people produce (i.e., fruit. Like the ‘Produce’ section in the grocery store) often indicate their spiritual condition (i.e., whether they are a good or bad tree):

43 “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44 Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. 45 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. (Lk 6:43-45, NIV)

59:40 — There should be some level of judgment (i.e., discerning good from evil and acting accordingly) in the Church. God will judge those outside the Church; we should judge those inside the Church (cf. 1 Cor 5:12-13). Also, Jesus says:

24 Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.” (Jn 7:24, NIV)

1:00:00 — On church discipline:

15 “If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. 16 But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ 17 If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector. (Mt 18:15-17, NIV)
