A Letter from Pastor Danny Scotton, Sr
Alpha,
the old African Proverb is correct, “It Takes a Village
to Raise a Child.” Our village is the community in which
we live, work, go to school and worship the Lord. God
has placed us where we are to make a difference in our
village. If our village is dysfunctional then our
village will raise dysfunctional children. Dr. Marva
Mitchell coined the phrase, “It Takes a Church to Raise
a Village.” This is a profound observation and a
challenge to ours and all the other churches in our
village. Let us Raise Our Village in 2006 so that the
village can more effectively raise our children. Jesus
said, “But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will
draw all men to myself” (John 12:32). Jesus has been
lifted and is drawing. We must do our part to point
people to Jesus.
As the Apostles Peter and John challenged the crippled
beggar to look at them, we have challenged the community
to “Look At Us” (Acts 3:4b). It’s not about our silver
or our gold; it’s about our sharing what we have
received from the Lord. In the Name of Jesus Christ of
Nazareth, we must help the people of our village who are
down, get up. We are in the business of Incarnational
Transformation. We must use the Word of God to renew the
minds of the people in our village. We must do this one
person at a time to the glory of God. The cumulative
effect will be a village that is spiritually healthy and
in a better position to raise our children.
